Relatório e Contas (Financial Statements)

What is the Relatório e Contas (Financial Statements) ?
In Portugal, companies are legally required to submit their annual financial statements to the Ministério da Justiça (Ministry of Justice). This document provides a comprehensive overview of a company’s financial health and are essential for regulatory compliance, financial transparency, and corporate governance.
It is a standardized document, meaning that if the company has filed its accounts, the downloaded document will always follow the same format. It typically includes the Balance Sheet and the Income Statement, as well as a large number of appendices (this document can span several dozen pages).
What does it look like?
This is an extract of the first page of the financial statements.

Key elements
- Header Section
- NIPC: Company’s unique tax identification number.
- Reporting Year: The financial year covered (e.g., 2023).
- Submission Type: Indicates whether it is the first declaration of the year.
- Reception Date: When the document was received by the Ministry.
- Accounting Framework
- A statement on the applicable accounting standard, often:
- Norma Contabilística e de Relato Financeiro para Pequenas Entidades (NCRF-PE) – Portuguese GAAP for Small Entities.
- Income Statement (Demonstração dos Resultados por Naturezas). This section provides a breakdown of revenues and expenses by nature. Each line item is presented with data for two consecutive fiscal years (N and N-1). In our experience, figures for year N-1 are very rarely provided.
- Balance Sheet (Balanço). This sections provides a complete description of Assets and Liabilities of the company. Again, the figure of N-1 are very rarely provided.
You will find the rest of the balance sheet (Liabilities) on page 2 of this document.
The remaining pages are dedicated to other financial appendices (such as financial participations, details of capital gains, etc.).
